After multiple extractions —
post-operative care instructions
The removal of multiple teeth is more complex than a single extraction. Bone reshaping is often required before denture placement, and more extensive post-operative effects should be expected. Follow these instructions carefully and contact our Irving, Mesquite, or Ennis office with any questions.
Control bleeding immediately Critical
If bleeding occurs, place a gauze pad directly over the bleeding socket and apply firm biting pressure for 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, bite on a moist tea bag for 30 minutes. Elevate your head, avoid hot liquids and exercise. Do not remove immediate dentures unless bleeding is severe. Some oozing around the edge of the denture is expected. Call us immediately if bleeding does not stop.
Ice packs — first 36 hours only Important
Apply ice packs externally to the operated area. Apply ice continuously while awake for the first 36 hours. After 36 hours, switch to a moist warm towel applied continuously for as long as tolerable to reduce remaining swelling and discoloration.
Pain medication
For mild discomfort: Tylenol, aspirin, or similar — two tablets every 3–4 hours. Ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) 200mg, 2–3 tablets every 3–4 hours. For severe pain, take the prescription provided. If pain does not begin to subside within two days, or worsens after two days, call our office.
Antibiotics Important
If an antibiotic was prescribed, complete the entire course regardless of how you feel. Stopping antibiotics early allows infection to return.
Fluids and nutrition
Drink plenty of fluids — at least 6 glasses of liquid on the first day. When many teeth are extracted, the body needs extra fluids to compensate for blood loss. Restrict your diet to soft foods and liquids. Gradually advance your diet as the wounds heal.
Do not rinse on day one Critical
Do not rinse your mouth on the first post-operative day, or while bleeding is present. Starting the day after surgery, use a warm salt water rinse (½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of lukewarm water) every 4 hours and after each meal.
Immediate dentures (if applicable)
If immediate dentures were inserted, sore spots may develop. Your dentist will typically see you within 24–48 hours to make adjustments. Do not skip this appointment — failure to address sore spots can lead to severe denture sores that prolong healing. Once adjusted, take out the dentures and rinse them 3–4 times daily.
Normal post-operative occurrences
The following are expected and do not require alarm: significant swelling peaking around day 2; bruising and discoloration around the eye area (apply moist warm compresses after 36 hours); sore throat from swollen throat muscles (resolves in 2–3 days); dry or cracked lip corners (apply Vaseline); slight temperature elevation for 24–48 hours (notify us if it continues); light-headedness when standing (sit for one minute before rising).
