After tooth extraction —
post-operative care instructions
After a tooth extraction at DFWOMS, protecting the blood clot that forms in the socket is the most important step in ensuring proper healing. Follow these instructions carefully to minimize complications and recover as quickly as possible.
Protect the blood clot Critical
A blood clot must form in the socket to stop bleeding and begin healing. Bite on the gauze pad for 30–45 minutes after your appointment. If bleeding continues, replace with a fresh gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. Repeat if necessary.
Avoid these actions for 72 hours Critical
Do not rinse vigorously, use straws, smoke, drink alcohol, or brush teeth next to the extraction site for 72 hours. These activities can dislodge or dissolve the clot and significantly delay healing. Limit vigorous exercise for the first 24 hours — increased blood pressure can cause additional bleeding.
Manage swelling
Apply an ice pack, or an unopened bag of frozen vegetables, to the affected area. Swelling usually subsides within 48 hours. If swelling persists beyond 2–3 days, call our office.
Pain medication and antibiotics Important
Take pain medication as prescribed by your surgeon. If medication does not seem to be working, call us. If antibiotics were prescribed, complete the full course — even if all signs of infection appear gone. Stopping early increases the risk of recurrence.
Diet and hydration
Drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious, soft food on the day of extraction. Do not use straws. You may return to a normal diet as soon as you are comfortable eating.
Resume oral hygiene after 24 hours Important
After 24 hours, resume normal brushing and flossing — including near the extraction site, but gently. Good oral hygiene speeds healing and prevents infection. Brush twice daily and floss at least once.
