After impacted tooth exposure —
post-operative care instructions
Following an impacted tooth exposure at DFWOMS, these instructions will help ensure proper healing. If a surgical packing was placed, do not disturb it. Contact our Irving, Mesquite, or Ennis office immediately with any concerns.
Do not disturb the wound Critical
Avoid touching, rinsing vigorously, or disturbing the surgical site. If a surgical packing was placed, leave it alone — it keeps the tooth exposed for proper eruption. If the packing becomes dislodged or falls out, do not be alarmed. Call our office for guidance.
Control bleeding Important
Some bleeding or redness in the saliva is normal for the first 24 hours. If bleeding is excessive — your mouth fills rapidly with blood — bite firmly on a gauze pad placed directly on the wound for 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, call us immediately.
Manage swelling with ice
Apply an ice bag, plastic bag, or towel filled with ice to the cheek over the surgical area. Apply ice continuously as much as possible for the first 36 hours. Swelling is a normal occurrence after oral surgery.
Diet
Drink plenty of fluids. Avoid hot liquids or food. On the day of surgery, eat soft foods and liquids only. Return to a normal diet as soon as possible, unless your surgeon has directed otherwise.
Pain medication
Begin taking pain medication as soon as the local anesthetic starts to wear off. For moderate pain: 1–2 Tylenol or Extra Strength Tylenol every 3–4 hours, or Ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) 400–600 mg every 3–4 hours. For severe pain, take the prescribed medication as directed.
Oral hygiene Important
Starting the day after surgery, clean your mouth thoroughly after each meal. Brush your teeth carefully. Rinse with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) six times a day, especially after eating. Continue until healing is complete. A clean wound heals better and faster.
Activity
Keep physical activity to a minimum immediately after surgery. Exercise may cause throbbing or bleeding — if this occurs, stop and rest. Reduced food intake during recovery may also lower your energy level.
